Once a program is transferred from the
disk into the RAM chips, it is ready
to be run. The program's instructions
are read by the CPU and carried out.
Perhaps part of the RAM will be used
for a scratch pad to hold data as it
is being changed. For instance, if
you are writing a letter with a word
processing program, that letter will
exist in the RAM. If the power was
turned off, the letter would be lost
unless you first copy it onto a disk.
